Bertha; the brave broiler chicken

2 weeks ago we were contacted about a brave Broiler chicken who made a daring escape from a chicken truck. Bertha, who came from a farm approved by the RSPCA, was facing a grim fate before a kind human stepped in to help.

At only 5 weeks old Bertha was just around the corner from the Brisbane slaughterhouse “Golden Cockerel” when she made the jump to save her own life. A member of the public thankfully picked her up from the road and took her to a specialist bird vet in Brisbane. After X-rays and scans, miraculously she had only suffered severe bruising and a fractured clavicle bone from the fall. This resilient chicken sure has a will to survive. ❤️

Bertha’s story hit the news headlines, but of course not in the way we would have wanted. More focused on the fact that she was taking a trip to the KFC drive thru rather than the fact that she had just jumped for her life.

She is now in our care in our Rehabilitation Centre. From here she will continue her rehabilitation and recover from her injuries. We have started her in a chicken wheelchair to help take the pressure off her legs as she continues to heal. She has a long road ahead of her to recovery, but with our dedicated team we know she will not only survive but thrive.

As a non-profit organization, we rely on the generosity of our community to fund our rescue efforts and provide ongoing care for animals, just like Bertha. Your donations make a tangible difference in the lives of these animals, giving them a second chance at life and the opportunity to thrive. 🥺🙏🏻
