August Ex Battery Hen Rescues

In August we embarked on two Chicken Rescue, heartfelt missions that saved 85 precious lives. These hens having spent their whole lives in horrific conditions, were about to face a grim fate until we stepped in.

After being transported to our property, thoroughly health checked and treated for lice and worms, 67 of these beautiful ladies headed to their new homes over the month. It was the beginning of the rest of their beautiful lives!

12 of the feathered ladies were taken to our hen hospital ICU where they received treatment. They arrived with various injuries – respiratory infections, broken legs, hip complications, and even broken wings. It’s a tough sight, but our dedicated team always do everything possible to nurse them back to health. Each day brought small victories and signs of recovery, which fuel our passion to keep fighting for these vulnerable creatures.

Biscuit was one of the more fragile hens admitted to the hen hospital that day. With incredibly sparse feathers, severe bruising, lacerations, unable to bear any weight and skeletally thin. We knew we had to do everything possible to help her, and we had a tough road ahead of us.

Fast forward four weeks later and we can happily report that Biscuit is going from strength to strength. After spending 10 days in a chicken wheelchair, doing intensive physio therapy, she is no longer needing assistance to stand! She is still only taking 10-12 steps at a time on her own but everyday she becomes stronger. It is beautiful to see her move around more freely on her own accord. Loving her food, water and of course the sun on her skin.

Despite our best efforts, three of the rescued hens passed away due to the neglect they had experienced. It's a stark reminder of the harsh realities these animals face and the urgency of our mission.

Each rescue operation and each life saved is made possible by the power of community support. Your donations help us continue our work and save more lives. Together, we can make a real difference in the world, one hen at a time.

Our chicken rescues are made possible by our Chicken Champion Sponsors. For as little as $10 per month you can make a difference in these ladies lives.
