Fly high, sweet Lou

We are deeply saddened to share the news of our darling Lou's passing. 💔🥺

Lou, the special Silkie chicken, captured the hearts of everyone at Happily Heifer After with her unique spirit and quirky personality. Preferring the company of humans, rather than that of her chicken friends, she sure was one of a kind.

Born back in 2019 with a deformed scissor beak, Lou faced challenges from the very beginning. Rejected by her breeder for not meeting their ‘show standards’, she was on the brink of being euthanized before we stepped in to give her a chance at life. At just 18 hours old, Lou came into our care and embarked on a journey of love, care, and determination.

Our team worked tirelessly with avian vets to correct Lou's beak, but unfortunately, due to its direction, surgical intervention was not possible. This meant that Lou had to be hand-fed 2-3 times a day for the entirety of her life. Despite these obstacles, Lou never lost her spark and became a shining example of resilience and strength for both her kind and Happily Heifer After as a whole.

Lou’s world changed a little over 12 months ago when Sweet Pea joined the family. She wasn’t the only special needs lady of the flock anymore. The two became very close and were never far apart ❤️

In early 2024, Lou was struck down with a severe throat infection. After countless rounds of antibiotics and months of treatment, Lou’s little body could not fight anymore. She was surrounded by love right until the end.

Lou's presence will truly be missed, but her legacy will live on in the hearts of all who knew her. We are grateful for almost 5 years that we had with Lou and the lessons she taught us about compassion, perseverance, and the beauty of every living being.

Rest in peace, sweet Lou. You will always hold a special place in all our hearts. ❤️🌈
