In late August we got a call about a dog that had been dumped at a nearby petrol station. This poor girl was severely emaciated, riddled with fleas and had what looked to be a previously broken front leg.
Despite seeing a broken body, Michelle also saw eyes that were filled with kindness, hope and love. As this little dog looked up at Michelle, she wagged her tail and her whole skinny body wiggled with excitement. This poor girl was in a bad state and sadly the neglect started long before she was dumped on the side of the road that day.
Not even thinking what our long term plan was, Michelle whisked her up and headed straight to the local vet. Sadly both numbers on her microchip had been disconnected…
We know that she has been loved and cared for previously in her life. She is desexed, knows basic commands and had an old collar on. We have no idea why her owner stopped caring for her, but we know that this dog did not deserve the neglect and abandonment. She had a name on her microchip, but she made no response what so ever. We knew we needed to give this beautiful soul a new name to celebrate the start of her new life. As we looked through name options one stood out, Asha; the one who lives. The origin of the word means Hope and Life. As we said “Asha” out loud, her big eyes looked up towards us and we knew who she was.
We then got Asha in for a few X-rays to see what was going on with her right front leg which had major swelling, as well as a few other issues. Sadly, after a long day of tests Michelle was called back into the vet and didn’t receive the news we were hoping for. The X-rays show that all of her major load bearing joints have arthritis in them, due to neglect of adequate nutrition in her diet. She also has arthritis in her back, pelvis and one side has hip dysplasia. Asha has all of these health issues, and she is only expected to be between 2-5 years old.
Despite everything she has been through, Asha has shown incredible progress, her spirit shining brighter with each passing day. She’s a living reminder of why we do what we do—because every animal deserves a chance to thrive.
Now, it’s time for the next chapter in Ashas story. We are looking for a forever home where this beautiful girl can flourish and thrive! Asha is not just a pet; she’s a survivor with a heart full of love to give. She needs a family who will cherish her, understand her past, and provide the nurturing environment she deserves!
